Dream On

Music has always been something that I valued and appreciated.  Lyrics speak to my soul and I listen for the message in every song.  When my cancer journey began, my sister asked me if I had picked a "battle" song yet.  I'm still working on finding the perfect song, and I can't imagine picking just one song. As I was thinking about this last night, it dawned on me that one has been staring me in my face my whole life and I had never really thought about it as a cancer fight song.  In a way it could be considered my family's theme song: Dream On.

More than 40 years ago, my dad set out to be a full-time lobsterman.  He had a boat and a dream to go fishing the way his father and brother had done.  He chose to name the boat "Dream On" after Aerosmith's hit, "Dream On."  This boat is still the boat my father fishes on.  In an industry where most fishermen go for newer, faster, and bigger boats, my dad has had the same trusty boat for over 40 years.  This boat has been with him through his major life events - his marriage to my mom 39 years ago, the births of my sister and me, and the birth of his grandson.  The boat has seen good days and bad days, but he has been able to count on it for many more years than I have been alive.   Even though I don't like to eat the lobster my dad catches, this boat has provided a lot for me over the years.  The work my dad did on it helped pay for basic needs, memorable family vacations, my college education, my wedding, and the list could go on and on.  It all started with my dad's dream and I'm so thankful for the example that he has provided.  Thinking about him as a young 20-something year old living out his dreams inspires me to keep my dreams alive.  No one knows when the good Lord will take us away, so in the meantime I will keep dreaming.

I love you, Dad, more than I could ever begin to tell you.  Thanks for dreaming and teaching me to dream.  I have many dreams not yet realized, so I am going to choose to have faith that I will live to see them come true.    💗

Round 2

May 28... Round 2, here I come!  I was feeling much better going into this round and was hopeful that was a sign that the chemo did its job for Round 1.  I was pleasantly surprised during vitals to find that I had not lost any more weight (yay for stability!) and my pulse was down from over 100 beats per minute to 84!  I was getting tired of everyone asking if I was okay since my pulse was so high... No, I wasn't okay.  Why would they ask that?! My appointment with Dr. Sinclair before chemo was very encouraging and brought me a lot of hope. She was very impressed with my reaction to the first dose of chemo.  With inflammatory breast cancer, you develop a rash, swelling, and hardness in the breast.  The rash is receding, the swelling has gone down, and the breast is not as hard as it was two weeks ago.  I also have a lot less bone pain and I feel like my lymph nodes are not as swollen.  The fevers have also disappeared.  I have had so many symptoms go away or lessen.  It kind of m

Life is tough but so am I...

My hair started to fall out in large clumps after my second chemo treatment.  I had so much hair and it was so thick.   It was so painful to watch it all happen.  I cried with every clump that fell and it just was not healthy to do so anymore.  After crying a lot Saturday evening and into the morning on Sunday, I asked Jason to call his mom to bring her clippers over and shave it off. She cried with me, prayed with me, and shaved it all off without saying a word.  Surprisingly, once the decision had been made, there were very few tears.  Yes, I miss it.  But I'm determined that I'll get better and have long, thick hair once again.  So the next time you see me, I'll be wearing a beanie or head scarf. As hard as that was... I have been reminded several times this week of something really important.  I look healthy again.  I've had several people comment that they wouldn't know I was sick just by looking at me (except for that pesky beanie I wear...). Soak Up the Sun

Last week was a busy week.  My mom, Jason, and I went to Dana-Farber on Monday to see Dr. Overmoyer.  While waiting for my appointment, I had the opportunity to visit with three of my former co-workers.  It was nice to see familiar faces in a not so familiar place.   Dr. Overmoyer was impressed with the improvements that you can see/that I can feel.  She felt it was time for a CT scan and set up a schedule of treatment/imaging to get me through the summer and into the fall.  She also gave me the week off from chemo because she wanted the CT scan before I had any more chemo. When she was getting ready to leave the room, I thanked her for giving me hope in this journey.   She turned around and said, "Thank you for getting well."  The words brought tears to my eyes.  I felt I was getting better, but to hear a doctor say it was so encouraging.  I am getting well.  Almost to the point that I can remove the word "getting" from that sentence.  I can't wait to say, &q
